HOW OR HOW NOT TO BECOME A WE
2017
2017
Performed as a workshop for Nothing Really Mattress at Bloomberg New Contemporaries, South London Gallery
February 2019 Score produced for the publication of and performed at: XXIII CSAV - Artist Research Laboratory 'Language and Sound as Sculpture' Fondazione Antonio Ratti Como, Italy July 2017 Performers: Alex Turgeon Doris Hardeman Titus Wonsey Isaac Contreras Claudia de la Torre Giulia Zabarella Kiah Endelman-Music Sara Rodrigues The score was purposefully not created for a group of trained musicians but for any group of people that find themselves intrigued with the dynamic possibilities of how or how not to become a we. The various fragments that make up the composition have been derived from the 3 weeks spent at Fondazione Ratti; where 15 artists have lived, worked, and inevitably spent most of their time together. These fragments make specific references to: language based exercises introduced in the workshop sessions by the invited artists, vocal exercises developed in my own workshops, the need or not to speak in English when in a group of people from all over the world, the easiness or difficulty in expressing oneself, in understanding and being understood due to: oral language, known vocabulary, culture, background, physical appearance, genetic predisposition, context, willingness, personality traits, and interests. Although it was conceived with a group of 15 people in mind, the piece has no fixed number of players. The score was performed at FAR on the last day of the research laboratory, producing 3 audio versions. |
